Better than take-out: Paleo Beef with Broccoli
Similar to my Paleo Mongolian Beef and Thai Basil Beef, I prefer to thin slice the beef against the grain then marinate it before stir-frying. This simple step will add some much more flavor to your dish. And one very special trick – adding a bit of baking soda to the beef will make it tender and juicy as opposed to tough and chewy.
Is baking soda Paleo and Whole30? Yes. Here’s a link to the member discussion on the Whole30 website, moderated by Whole30 forum moderators.
For the best Chinese Beef and Broccoli Stir-Fry
Layer the marinated beef in one thin layer in a hot sauté pan. You should hear a sizzling sound and the heat will create a nice sear and slightly charred surface to make the beef irresistibly delicious. Do the same thing for the flip side of the beef. Trust me, it’s going to be A-mazing !! Also check out how to make the best beef stir-fry to learn the basic Chinese stir-fry technique. It goes hand-in-hand with this beef and broccoli recipe!

To make a great Chinese beef stir-fry, follow these principles –
- Select the right cut of beef. I prefer skirt steak, beef flap, flank, or sirloin.
- Thin slice against the grain and marinade for at least 15 minutes.
- Use a stainless skillet skillet and pre-heat the skillet well.
- Sear the beef in one layer without disturbing for about 2 minutes and the flip side about 30 seconds.
- Pair it with vegetables and serve hot or in room temperature.
Temperature of the skillet
The temperature of your skillet plays an important part in Chinese stir-fry. Watch my Youtube video on how to properly preheat your skillet for stir-fry two ways and be sure to subscribe to I Heart Umami Youtube channel!

There’s a reason why this recipe is so popular on my website. The beef is juicy and tender, paired with crisp broccoli florets. A simple and quick (no chopping required) beef marinade with a naturally sweet and savory stir-fry sauce. This broccoli and beef stir-fry comes together in minutes and every bite is bursting with flavor. No wonder everyone loves this dish so much. Did I mention it’s not only Paleo but also Keto and Whole30?

Paleo Beef with Broccoli Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb beef (sirloin, skirt steak, boneless short ribs…etc.)
- 1 to 2 heads broccoli, break into florets
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 pieces thin sliced ginger, finely chopped
- Ghee or cooking fat of your choice
Beef marinade:
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp arrowroot/sweet potato powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
Sauce combo:
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1 tbsp red boat fish sauce
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Slice beef into about ¼ inch thin. Marinate thin sliced beef with ingredients under “beef marinade”. Mix well. Place broccoli florets in a microwave safe container. Add 1-2 tbsp water. Loosely covered with a lid or wet paper towel and microwave for 2 mins. Cook until broccoli is tender but still crunchy. Set aside.
- Heat a wok over medium heat w/ 1 ½ tbsp ghee. When hot, lower the heat to medium, add garlic and ginger. Season w/ a small pinch of salt & stir-fry until fragrant (about 10 secs).
- Turn up the heat to medium-high, add marinated beef. Spread beef evenly over the bottom of the saute pan and cook until the edge of the beef is slightly darkened and crispy. Do the same thing for flip slide – about ¾ way cooked through with slightly charred and crispy surface.
- Add “Sauce Combo”. Stir-fry about 1 min. Add broccoli. Stir-fry another 30 secs. Toss everything to combine.
Great recipe! We make it all the time. Super easy and the whole family loves it.
Looks delicious – but wondering about the quantity of ginger…
“2 pieces thin sliced ginger, finely chopped”
Roughly how many teaspoons or tablespoons of ginger fo you recommend?
Roughly 2 tsp finely minced
East and delicious! This meal is a staple, not only during whole30 but throughout the year!
Delicious and super easy to make! I had cut my beef into thin long strips but next time I will half the long strips. I used sirloin. I also placed the beef in freezer for 30 minutes to make it easy to cut. The sauce was absolutely delicious and we cleaned it up with some brown basmati rice (not paleo). Will for sure make again!
I just made this for dinner and it was soooo good. My whole family loved this. We had bell peppers about to go bad and I added that with the broccoli. I will definitely be making this again.
So happy to hear! Fantastic veggie choice!
Just WOW!!! Better than takeout. Fairly easy to make, with simple, accessible ingredients. I made this with your fried caulirice. Great blog!!!
This was delicious, thank you!! Even my husband liked it (which says a lot, because he doesn’t usually like what I make), and said it’s better than Panda (Express)!
I used thin-sliced steak from Trader Joe’s. It came out so perfectly tender!!
My only compliant is that it was too salty. I will not add any salt next time, and maybe less coconut aminos (I used Trader Joe’s brand).
Thank you! I also use coarse sea salt from Whole Foods. Fine sea salt or kosher salt is saltier than coarse sea salt.
Made this last night and it came out perfectly! I will be using that technique to cook vegetables for stir fry from now on, they were tender but still crisp and bright green, and it shortened the overall cooking time since they could be cooking while I stir fried the beef – which was delicious!
So yummy and easy! I am planning on making it again! Can I marinate the meat overnight?
Hello Susan, yes you can. You can reduce the fish sauce quantity a bit since you’ll be marinating it overnight. 🙂
Delicious! Even my super picky husband gave it a thumbs up 👍 score! I read where another reviewer commented that it was “velvety smooth” and that really is a great way to describe it. What leftovers we did have were cleaned out at lunchtime today. Yummy!
On a side note, I do understand that ads help keep websites running, but the pop-up video ads are super annoying. Seems to freeze my phone up! It didn’t stop me from making the meal (I just kept refreshing my phone) or from leaving a 5 star rating, but just thought I’d mention it 🙂 Thanks again for a great recipe!
So easy and quick to make!
BEST EVER!
Very good! The whole family loved it and gobbled it up. I enjoyed it with short grain brown rice. Just make sure to reduce the salt if you use tamari or soy sauce instead of coconut aminos!
Yes! Absolutely! And I’d also like to add that to those of you who use tamari or soy sauce, add a sweetener of choice to balance the flavor because coconut aminos (not Bragg’s liquid aminos) tastes naturally sweeter than soy and tamari.
I added a little broth and red pepper flakes, as well as some carrots, green onions, and sesame seeds. It was so delicious! The best Chinese I ever had!
Thank you!
This is the best beef with broccoli recipe. I didn’t know about the baking soda hack, which makes the meat so tender. My husband asked me to put this on our meal rotation!
So velvety soft and yummy! Tastes very authentic!
Thank you!
I made this last night and it was seriously delicious! The best flavor! I did drain some of the liquid in the pan in the middle of cooking the beef, so it could get crispy on the edges, and that worked great. Adding this to my repertoire! Yum!
Thank you so much!
Simple, easy and a hit! Perfect for a weeknight meal!
Oh yum! I didn’t have fresh ginger, but used lots of ground ginger instead. Threw in a few red and yellow pepper strips and some spicy Sambal Oelek at the end. Sprinkled with some sesame seeds and it looked and tasted like takeout!
