How to make frozen sweet potato fries in air fryer
Air frying frozen sweet potato fries is so simple—you’ll get crispy yet tender fries every time with zero prep! The key to success is avoiding overcrowding. This recipe’s time and temperature are for 0.5 lb of fries in a 6 quart air fryer. We’ll cook a 1 lb bag in two easy batches.
- Prep the Air Fryer: Spray the basket with avocado oil. Frozen yam fries already have oil on them, so there’s no need to coat the fries themselves.
- Load the Fries: Place frozen yam fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding for air flow and even crisping.
- Cook (First Round): Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 6 minutes.
- Shake & Flip: Remove the basket and let it sit for 10 seconds to release moisture. Shake vigorously or flip fries with a spatula.
- Cook (Second Round): Air fry for another 2 minutes at 400°F (200°C). The fries are done when they’re crispy but not burnt.
- Repeat: Cook the remaining batch following the same steps.
- Serve: Transfer hot fries to a serving plate and season with salt to taste. Enjoy them plain or with your favorite dipping sauce.
Extra crispy!
Tips for extra crispy fries
- Always cook in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Lay the fries in a single layer with minimal overlapping.
- Don’t spray extra oil on the fries. This will add extra moisture, leading to soggy fries.

ChihYu’s helpful notes
- No extra oil needed: Frozen sweet potato fries already have oil from the manufacturer—just a light spritz on the basket is enough to prevent sticking.
- Stick to the right temperature: Air fry at 400°F (200°C) to get that perfect balance of crispy outsides and fluffy insides without burning.
- Avoid overcrowding the basket: Cook the fries in a single layer to ensure even crisping. Overloading the air fryer can result in soggy fries.
- Shake halfway through: Always shake or flip the fries after the first round of cooking to release moisture and achieve even browning.
- Batch cooking is key: If you’re making more than 1 lb of fries (in a 6 qt. air fryer), cook them in smaller batches for the crispiest results.

Frozen sweet potato fries in air fryer recipe
Ingredients
- Avocado oil spray for air fryer basket
- 1 lb Frozen sweet potato fries crinkle cut
- Coarse sea salt to taste, optional
Optional dipping sauces:
Instructions
- Prep the Air Fryer: Spray the basket with a thin layer of avocado oil.
- Load the Fries: Place frozen sweet potato fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding for even crisping. (For a 6-quart air fryer, separate into two 0.5 lb / 285 g batches.)
- Cook (First Round): Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 6 minutes.
- Shake & Flip: Remove the basket, let it sit for 10 seconds to release moisture, then shake vigorously or flip fries with a spatula.
- Cook (Second Round): Air fry for another 2 minutes at 400°F (200°C), or until crisp but not burnt.
- Repeat: Cook the remaining batch following the same steps.
- Serve: Transfer hot fries to a serving plate, season with salt if needed, and enjoy plain or with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Converting Oven Instructions: Reduce oven temperature by 25% and halve the minimum cooking time when converting to air fryer settings.
- Example: If oven instructions recommend 425°F (220°C) for 12-24 minutes, air fry at 400°F (200°C) for about 6 minutes to start.
- For Perfectly Crispy Fries: Always cook in batches to avoid overcrowding. Lay the fries in a single layer with minimal overlapping for the best texture. Air fryers work by circulating hot air in a small, confined space. As food cooks, it releases moisture, so to achieve the crispiest results, avoid overloading the basket.
- Store-bought frozen sweet potato fries are pre-coated with oil during manufacturing, so there’s no need to spray additional oil on top. A light spritz in the basket is enough to prevent sticking.
- Reheat leftovers at 360°F (182°C) for 4 to 5 minutes.
